The largest city in Alabama, Birmingham is most known for its role in the Civil Rights Movement, and is home to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, which is a museum and research center that documents the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Birmingham is also known for its role in the steel industry and is home to the Sloss Furnaces, which is a National Historic Landmark, as well as the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and the Birmingham Museum of Art. There are two major universities in Birmingham, the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) and the Birmingham-Southern College.
